The issue of formation of gymnasts’ technical skills is relevant up to this date. The technique of doing gymnastic exercises is still in the center of attention of many experts, for it is the one that influences competitive results and development of the world gymnastics.
 
The specific feature of gymnasts' technical skills is continuous growth all the long-term training process long. Logical and consistent growth of technical skills of gymnasts of different qualifications requires not only the use during training of exercises for quicker learning of techique of exercises, but also knowing and using of basic exercises, forming the special motor experience and main skills.
 
Thus the purpose of the present study was to reveal the basic horizontal bar routines as a basis of the essence of technical competence of gymnasts of different skill categories.
 
The study proves that the essence of gymnasts’ technical competence in horizontal bar routines and its further enhancement is to be based on basic exercises.
 
Basic exercises are distinguished in every skill category and every type of combined event, have an advanced technical structure. The study of the essence of technical competence of gymnasts of different skill categories in horizontal bar routines resulted in the allocation of the following basic exercises which are stipulated in the paper.
 
The biomechanical explanation of the basic horizontal bar routines in enhancement of the training process of gymnasts of different skill categories can be considered as one of perspectives of the study.
