Speed-strength testing and analyzing by standing jumps in volleyball

Multiple motor tasks arise during the competitive activity of athletes representing team sports that require from the athlete to show speed-strength abilities of varying levels. For example, in volleyball, an athlete needs to either jump at the maximum height, or at the required height, but at the maximum speed depending on the current game situation. In this regard, different speed of the take-off performed when jumping is possible. At present, there is an increasing need for finding more effective training methods aimed at increasing the level of speed-strength abilities of athletes, especially in team sports. Objective of the given study was to provide a speed-strength testing and analyzing toolkit by the maximal height-and-push-off-speed standing jumps in volleyball trainings. Sampled for the experiment were 28 athletes whose jumping qualities were tested by MLB Biomechanics Test System sensors. The athletes were required to jump to the maximal height with the maximal push-off speed and to the 60%-maximal height. Tests in the study were designed to profile the lower limb speed-strength operation patterns depending on the jump goals (height versus push-off speed). The test data and analyses showed the need for the special physical training component of the training system being revised to step up the volleyball players’ speed-strength qualities and control abilities for versatility of the match tactics.
