Surgut state university and sport are united! It is not just words, but has been a systematic, purposeful work with students on their involvement in active sports activities for twenty years. It should be noted that the interest in development of the university sport in the country is growing year after year. Thus, the Federal law “On the amendments to the Federal law “On physical culture and sport in the Russian Federation” and the article 16 of the Federal law “On higher and post graduate vocational training” adopted on December, 3 2011 (№384-FL) contains the precise definition of the concept of university sport, along with its popularization to be one of the primary tasks of educational institutions.

The history of development and formation of university sport in Surgut state university starts almost immediately after the establishment of the university, when the Sports club came into operation that is still acting as a sponsor of all mass sports and recreational activities.

The sports club activities are carried out in the two main directions. The first one is creation of conditions for more effective physical education in the university, involvement of more students in extra sports and competitive activities.

The solution of this task involved the Combined sports contest for students of non-sports faculties held in the university in 12 sports and the organized extracurricular training sessions in sport sections, where the persons interested can improve their physical and technical skills in various kinds of motor activity.

Over 3000 SurSU students take part in fitness and mass sports activities during the academic year and the best of them represent the university at big competitions - Municipal festival of university sport, where they achieve high sport results.

The second direction is ensuring of training and participation of university teams and single athletes in regional and Russian competitions. Various sports are being developed based on SurSU such as basketball, volleyball, futsal, swimming, cross country ski race, biathlon, track and field athletics, kettlebell lifting, judo, boxing, table tennis, weight lifting, powerlifting, Greco-Roman wrestling, sport orienteering, taekwondo. Today 4 Honored masters of sport are studying in the university, including: Rudnitsky Andrew, Fatin Paul, Shmygin Vladimir, Drozdov Alexander, 15 masters of sport of international grade, including Legkov Alexander, Volkov Alexey, Kiseleva Anna, Semenova Olga, Vershinina Christina, Kozydub Olga, Bgan Maxim etc. and over 60 masters of sport and 150 candidates for master of sport.

Game national teams have been achieving high sport results for many years. Our players participate not only in student competitions, but in Russian professional leagues.

The women’s basketball club – University-Ugra”, headed by trainer Al’kova S.Yu., is a participant of the Russian Women’s Championship of the Premier League. In the season 2011-2012 female students of SurSU won bronze in the Russian Women’s Championship of the Premier league and were the third at the III Russian Summer Student games.

The men’s basketball team (trainer – Vetoshnikov A.Yu.) is a repeated winner of the Student games of KhMAR-Ugra, in the season 2012-2013 the team won the Championship of the University basketball association of the Tyumen district and was the finalist of these competitions in the UrFD.

The men’s volleyball national team (trainer – Rudenko V.N.) is known for its significant achievements. In the season 2012-2013 the volleyball players were the finalists of the Championship of the Volleyball league among first class men’s teams. Our female volleyball players compare well with the boys (trainer – Tsarenko I.N.) and were repeated winners of Student games of higher educational institutions of KhMAR-Ugra and now are playing in the final of the Championship of student volleyball league among first class women’s teams.

Boys of the SurSU national futsal team, headed by Savin V.G., won the third place in the All-Russia project “Futsal to universities” “Golden League” and were the winners of the All-Russia project “Futsal to universities” “Silver League” (UrFD) in the season 2011-2012.

Students-athletes keep pace with players in other sports. There are many victories in the history of student swimming of SurSU both in the Russian and world arenas. Nowadays we pin our hopes for Kiseleva Anna, Semenova Olga, Shumaylov Alexander, Ivanchikov Ivan, Vershinina Christina, who are the contenders in the Russian national team for XXVII World Summer Student games-2013 in Kazan.

One is to mark our prominent cross country skiers who studied in the university in different periods. These are Varvarin Maxim, Kuznetsov Alexander, Turyshev Sergey, Turysheva Elena. Sports traditions are kept in this sport and now we are following the success on a ski track of the postgraduate of SurSU Legkov Alexander, master of sport of international grade, member of the Russian national team.

Quite recently biathlon was introduced to the university. And even though this sport is new for the university, we have athletes to be proud for: Ivanov Yaroslav, Morozova Nadezhda, Boyarskikh Mikhail, Boyarskikh Eugene, and of course Volkov Alexey, master of sport of international grade, member of the Russian biathlon national team.

Such sports as boxing, judo, Greco-Roman wrestling, taekwondo are being actively developed in Surgut state university. Big achievements in these sports belong to the following athletes: Shashko Ivan, Aliyev Nurali, Korkmasov Ruslan, Klimtsev Alexey, Dovgan’ Dmitry, Pilipchuk Maxim, Zaytseva Alexandra, Veretekhina Anastasia.

The university is famous for its track and field athletes. Rudnitsky Andrew – master of sport of international grade participated in Sydney Olympics 2000 and in Athens in 2004. Weightlifting – Klimonov Egor, master of sport of international grade won silver in the World Junior championship in 2012 and gold in the World Student Championship.

Much attention is being paid in the university to development of different sports for handicapped students. Bgan Maxim, honored master of sport in track and field athletics, is a member of the Russian national team (deaf sport). Maxim was again on one of the top places in the World Championship in 2012 where he won silver.

Hence, Surgut state university is a well-deserved leading university in the district developing university sport. The university represented the district in 12 sports of the competitive program and won the 4^th place in the team championship among 120 universities of Russia in the III Russian Summer Student games-2012.

And we keep going. The program “Development of physical culture, sport and tourism in Surgut state university of Khanty-Mansiisk autonomous region – Ugra for 2012-2015” was adopted in the university in 2012, and we hope that its implementation will ensure further maintaining of the obtained level and winning even more victories in sports arenas.
