Objective of the study was to identify the motivation of sports enthusiasts during group and individual running sessions.
Methods and structure of the study. The research involved 93 amateur runners aged 19 to 69 years. All participants in the study were divided into two groups: those training in a group (42 people) and those training individually with a trainer (51 people). All athletes underwent a survey procedure using the method «Assessment of the motives of an amateur athlete (Motivation Scale for Physical Activity, MODA)» adapted by K.A. Bochaver, D.V. Bondarev, M.A. Papkova and the author's questionnaire for the analysis of biographical data of the motivational attitudes of the subjects.
Results and conclusions. The motivations of amateur runners for regular training were revealed, and the links between motivation and the form of training were established, in the context of the growing interest in participation in marathons and races, especially in St. Petersburg, where an increase in the number of athletes entering the start every year is noted. Differences were found on the scale – «Group affiliation» in athletes training individually and in a group, features of factors in maintaining motivation and differences in the final goal of training were found. Despite the multifaceted and individual motives for running, common features were identified that allow runners to be united into a single community, regardless of their personal motivational accents.
