Objective of the study was to clarification of the basic concepts of the theory of physical culture and sports, taking into account modern realities.
Methods and structure of the study. The research work was carried out at the Moscow State University of of Sport and Tourism, during which the information content of scientific and educational literature was studied.
Results and conclusions. The fundamental concepts of sports science are supplemented by the results of modern research: the concepts of sport and physical culture, forms of physical culture are clarified, a unique diagram of the structure (form) of the branch of physical culture and sports is presented, the place of the theory of sports in the system of sciences is determined, modern types of sports are highlighted, the diversity of functions of physical culture is presented, and the interrelations of structural elements of the branch of physical culture and sports are revealed.
