Introduction. In the conditions of modern Russia, various sports are actively developing, despite the various difficulties of the current historical stage [2]. Game sports attract more and more athletes because of their entertainment and the ability to improve the overall health of the body. Wheelchair basketball is now becoming one of the very popular Paralympic sports in Russia [1].
The aim of the study is to clarify the motives of athletes with musculoskeletal system pathology for wheelchair basketball.
Methodology and organization of the study. To conduct the study, 61 Paralympic basketball players from Moscow, Moscow Region, St. Petersburg, Ulyanovsk Region, Tyumen, Kazan, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug with musculoskeletal pathology were surveyed to assess the importance of different motives on a 10-point scale. The results were processed on a computer using the method of averages.
The results of the study and their discussion. The surveyed athletes turned out to be unanimous in determining the main motives, evaluating them for the maximum score. Basketball players with a lesion of the musculoskeletal system are motivated to realize themselves in sports with the achievement of sporting success for the benefit of their country, despite the existing pathology in their body. Respondents categorized as "extremely important" the opportunity to become useful to their country, enjoying participating in competitions, training and competing with like-minded people, playing professional sports, wanting to win the Paralympic Games or the World Cup and improving their physical fitness through regular wheelchair basketball classes.
Conclusions. Athletes with musculoskeletal system pathology consider wheelchair basketball to be a reliable means to become useful for Russia, an opportunity for their socialization in society and an effective means of improving the quality of life during successful participation in sports activities.
