Objective of the study was to substantiation of the need to apply the methodology of institutional analysis when studying many key issues in the economics of sports, in particular, the problems of forming contractual relations and the distribution of income between participants in sporting events.
Methods and structure of the study. The analysis of the problems of contractual relations in sports, the conflict of economic interests of participants and organizers of sporting events is carried out through the methodological prism of the theory of property rights, the concepts of transaction costs and information asymmetry, which allows us to look at sport as an economic activity that exists within a fairly strict institutional framework.
Results and conclusions. The necessity of using institutional methodology in studying the economics of sports is substantiated, which has a positive effect when assessing competition in this market segment. The possibilities of achieving Pareto-optimal allocation of resources in the sports market are demonstrated, taking into account the existing level of information transparency. The factors preventing the implementation of the Coase theorem in the market of professional athletes are described. Studying the sports market taking into account institutional methodology allows not only to identify problems in the development of this type of activity, but also to suggest ways to overcome them, for example, by improving the quality of institutional regulation of professional sports.

Keywords: professional sports, institutional methodology, Coase theorem, sports market failures, contractual relations.
