The influence of value orientations on sports motivation of Russian youth athletes

Objective of the study was to assess the influence of value orientations on the sports motivation of Russian youth athletes.
Methods and structure of the study. A regression analysis of the results of a survey of respondents obtained using the value questionnaire of S. Schwartz and the methodology for diagnosing sports motivation Sport Motivation Scale of R. J. Vallerand was carried out. The survey involved 214 athletes (age 15-20 years) from 12 cities of the Russian Federation.
Results and conclusions. It was revealed that the predictors «Tradition», «Achievement», «Independence», «Kindness», «Stimulation», «Hedonism» have a positive influence on the internal motivation of respondents. The predictors «Traditions», «Universalism», «Achievements», «Power» have a positive influence on the external motivation of respondents. Regression analysis showed that the most common predictor influencing the sports motivation of Russian youth athletes is the value of «Tradition». In this regard, within the framework of psychological and pedagogical support for the training of Russian youth athletes, it is necessary to focus on the continuity of sports generations, on outstanding achievements and events of domestic sports.
