Introduction. Systematic physical activity can activate the entire body and, first of all, the heart [1]. Undoubtedly, the enormous contribution of this organ to obtaining high athletic results makes it necessary to further study its response to regular muscle training [2], including in game sports.
The purpose of the study is to find out the cardiac characteristics of young men engaged in basketball.
Methodology and organization of the study. The experiment involved 18 clinically healthy boys (17-18 years old) involved in basketball, with at least three years of sports experience, and 29 clinically healthy boys (17-18 years old), physically untrained – the control group. An ultrasound examination of the heart was performed, followed by statistical processing of the revealed data.
The results of the study and their discussion. The diameter of the left cardiac sections of the representatives in both groups of subjects was similar. The thickness at the time of diastole of the posterior wall of the left ventricle in athletes was 14.4% greater than that in the control. The final diastolic volume of the basketball players was 9.9% higher than in the control, while the impact volume was comparable in both groups. The myocardial mass index in regular trainees exceeded the value in the control by 19.2%. The rate of relaxation of the heart in the area of the posterior wall of the left ventricle in basketball players was 31.1% higher than the value in the control. All the examined patients had similarities in the overall size of the left ventricle and the size of its cavity, as well as the characteristics of central hemodynamics and the ability of the heart to contract. The ratio of diastolic volume to heart mass in basketball players (0.68±0.14) indicated the prevalence of signs of hypertrophy in the heart of athletes over the processes leading to the expansion of its chambers.
Conclusion. Systematic classes in the basketball section contribute to the development of the heart muscle and increase its functional capabilities, which ensures a high degree of perfusion of all internal organs.
