Objective of the study was to scientifically substantiate the author’s approach to the presentation of facts and events of the ancient and medieval history of Olympism for a deep and reliable understanding of its true social essence.
Methods and structure of the study. The study was organized using methods of historiographical, traditional (qualitative-content), logical-linguistic analysis of documents, which are written primary sources located in the archives and repositories of libraries of Western universities, as well as taking into account the recently published results of interethnic European archaeological expeditions over the past 30 years.
Results and conclusions. In the course of the analysis of Russian and foreign information sources, it was determined that the theory and history of Olympism requires significant and fundamental adjustment according to such criteria as ethno-national origin; time and causes of occurrence; real social essence, functions and historical significance; historical forms and periodization of Olympism; the time and reasons for the temporary disappearance of Olympism from the historical arena; reasons, social essence and purpose of Olympism in the version of Pierre de Coubertin; historically determined social features of modern Olympism and their socio-economic and political-legal manifestations in the 20th and 21st centuries.
The identified criteria make it possible to eliminate the discrepancy between the domestic version of the ancient and medieval history of Olympism and its true history, recorded in Western ancient and medieval primary sources.
