The purpose of the study is to identify the leading factors determining the success of the professional activity of football referees.
Methodology and organization of the study. The main research method was a questionnaire, which was conducted in the form of a mass written survey. During 2022/2023, arbitrators with different work experience and qualifications were surveyed. The answers to the questionnaire questions made it possible to identify objective and subjective factors affecting the quality of refereeing, to identify the key professional problems of football referees.
The results of the study and their discussion. According to the majority of arbitrators (the total number of seats is 7.63), theoretical training is a priority in professional activity. Physical fitness is also one of the priorities in the training of football referees. Thus, the respondents consider general physical training (the sum of places is 7.39) more significant than special physical training (6.91).
Respondents put technical, psychological and tactical training in approximately equal positions (the sum of places is 5.86, 5.63 and 5.41, respectively). The role of cognitive abilities is assessed by referees at a low level (3.23), but the least significant among the responses was the indicator reflecting the personal gaming experience of the referee (the sum of seats is 2.19).
Conclusions. Thus, novice referees have a significant number of erroneous decisions at matches of adult club teams. The obtained data indicate that in the training of football referees, the most priority types should be theoretical and physical training, which affect the main indicator of judicial activity – the number of judicial errors.
