Introduction. Gymnastics training at a university that does not have a sports specialization takes more than 50% of the total time of physical education classes. At such lessons, simple drill exercises are done, as well as exercises on the crossbar for boys and a gymnastic bench and mats for girls [1].
The purpose of the study is to show the role of gymnastics in educational classes at the university.
Research methodology. Long-term pedagogical observations, analysis of the results of passing control standards by students at the university.
The results of the study and their discussion. In the introductory part of the lesson of any orientation, drill exercises are conducted on the spot and in motion. Further, in the preparatory part of the lesson, general developmental exercises are conducted on the spot and in motion. In the main part there are strength exercises, namely: pulling up and lifting the legs in the hang on the crossbar for boys, bending and unbending the arms from the resting position lying on the gymnastic bench and lifting the torso from the lying position on the mat for girls. In the final part of the lesson, stretching exercises, flexibility and recovery of breathing are given.
Conclusions. The elements of gymnastics and gymnastic exercises themselves occupy a significant part of the physical training of students at the university, they are used in all parts of the lesson and at the same time are the basis for preparing for the passing of control standards. When performing them, such important physical qualities as strength, flexibility and dexterity develop.
