Objective of the study was to assess the activity of independent use of physical culture and sports during leisure time among young people living in the cities of the Urals and Western Siberia.
Methods and structure of the study. The survey involved 805 young people aged 18 to 35 (308 men and 497 women).
Results and conclusions. A survey conducted in the spring of 2022 showed that 76.2% of respondents have an existing need for independent physical activity in their free time, while 65.3% of survey participants are involved in this activity. The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed not only to an increase in the number of people who have joined physical culture and sports, but also to a change in the motives for physical activity, putting personal health care in the first place. Physical culture and sports preferences of young people involved in independent physical culture and sports activities are diverse. The ability to exercise at any time of the day influenced the priority of self-organized forms of physical activity. Open workouts, organized free of charge by outdoor fitness centers for the public, are becoming more popular among young people. The lack of systematic control over the dynamics of one's own functional state in the process of independent physical culture and sports activities, for the majority of those involved, shows the importance of developing a program for pedagogical support of physical culture and sports activities in leisure conditions.

Keywords: self-organized classes, theory of participation in active leisure, involvement, physical culture and sports preferences.
