Effect of functional training on physical condition of self-training martial artists during self-isolation

The aim of the study is to determine the effect of functional training on the physical condition of young martial artists who train independently in self-isolation mode.
Methodology and organization of the study. The participants were 37 athletes (average age - 18.06±3.19 years) competing in judo (n=16), sambo (n=13) and combat sambo (n=8). All the martial artists had at least five years of training experience and qualifications not lower than the candidate for Master of Sports of Russia. All athletes observed the self-isolation regime for 3.5 months (March-June 2020). During this period, all athletes trained independently, at home. The training plan during the period of self-isolation included four workouts per week (the volume of each workout is 45-60 minutes). After returning to the usual training regime (June 2020), all martial artists performed a special throw fitness test to assess the level of functional fitness [1]. The athletes' reports on the structure and intensity of self-training were also studied.
The results of the study and their discussion. Reports showed that most (n=25) athletes used interval (circular) and/or aerobic training in self-isolation mode. The average duration of circular training was 52.29±09.44 minutes, aerobic training - 57.53±04.37 minutes. The average heart rate readings were 142.61±27.33 beats/min, with circular and aerobic training - 138.25±16.33 beats/min. The remaining martial artists (n=12) preferred high-intensity functional training (based on HIIT or CrossFit protocols) with an average duration of 46.53±05.28 minutes. The average heart rate readings of these athletes were 146.15±24.08 beats/min. There were no significant differences in the values of the IJFT index between athletes. All athletes showed results in the range from 11.30-13.52, which corresponds to a satisfactory (average) level of functional fitness.
Conclusion. Young athletes can use different types of functional training: HIIT, CrossFit, circular or aerobic training to maintain athletic fitness during the period of self-isolation.
