Objective of the study was to profile gender-specific volitional control versus the individual life values and priorities, extraversion and neuroticism.
Methods and structure of the study. We sampled swimmers of different skill levels (n= 56, 29 men, 27 women) for three standard psychological tests.
Results and conclusion. The tests found significant gender group differences on the volitional control scales, and different volitional control correlations: only positive with the life values and priorities; positive and negative with extraversion; and only negative volitional control correlations with neuroticism. The volitional control correlation with neuroticism was the highest in the women’s group on the Self-control and Patience scale (r=-0.491, p=0.008). The study found that an individual volitional control is the complex interrelated system with neuroticism and extraversion – as solid and basic personality formations dictated by biological factors – may be corrected only in the external behavioral domain, without major psychological changes. Negative effects of high neuroticism and extraversion on the individual volitional control, self-esteem, sensitivity and irritability may be offset by target efforts to change the athlete’s individual life values and priorities as the most flexible personality domain.
Keywords: volitional control, swimmers, life values and priorities, extraversion, neuroticism, correction.
