Objective of the study was to identify significant parameters of self-regulation and their interaction with stress tolerance as the most important factor in providing conditions for the realization of the personal adaptive potential of student-athletes that contribute to their successful activity.
Methods and structure of the study. The Experimental Group was made up of the male (n=23) and female students (n=18) who were regularly involved in sports activities (CMS and senior categories). The Control Group included the non-sporting pedagogical university students, 20 young males and 20 females. The mean age of the students was 19 years.
The subjects’ stress tolerance was assessed in Y.V. Shcherbatykh’s stress tolerance test. The general self-regulation level as an indicator of the degree of formation of the individual system of conscious self-regulation of arbitrary activity was studied using the methodology "Style of behavior self-regulation – 98" (V. Morosanov).
Results and conclusions. It is shown that regular sports activities significantly improve the athletes’ ability to self-regulate and tolerate high stresses. As opposed to the Control Group subjects, the athletes were found to have a significantly lower level of stress sensitivity, while the general self-regulation level was significantly higher. There was a negative correlation of the general conscious self-regulation level, adequacy of self-assessment of own activity and independence with all the stress sensitivity indicators, reciprocal to stress tolerance. It can be argued that the high level of development of conscious self-regulation of arbitrary activity is one of the most important resources of a personality, ensuring both its efficiency and tolerance to high stresses.
