Background. Teacher training in Kolomna was launched back in 1920, when a pedagogical school was established to train primary school teachers. In 1939, the pedagogical school was transformed into a two-year teacher training institute to train pedagogical staff for the seven-year school courses of Russian language and literature, mathematics, physics and history. The trainings were run even in the hardships of the World War II, when many teachers and students went to the battlefields and sacrificed their lives to near the great Victory Day. The new generations of teachers and students of our Institute still pay grateful tribute to them.
The year of 1953 is considered a rebirth date for the Institute when it was formally transformed into a pedagogical establishment to expand the faculty and student population and make the Institute more fit for more ambitious educational, practical, research and cultural initiatives supported by the persistently extended and improved material assets.
In June 1960, a first cornerstone of the future pedagogical campus was laid in the location assigned by the municipal council. The Institute faculty and students provided a great practical and enthusiastic support to the Institute construction projects. On September 16, 1959, Kalnin N.N. was appointed Sports Club Chairman at the-then Pedagogical Institute to lead the efforts to establish gymnastics (coached by Kalashnikov V.G., Kalnin N.N.), cycling, speed skating (coached by Grigoryev E.S.), skiing (coached by Zabavnikov A.P.), athletics (coached by Prokudin B.F.), volleyball (coached by Dobrynchenko V.N.), and basketball (coached by Turkunov B.I.) groups. On the initiative of V.G. Kalashnikov, Sports club and Physical Education Chair Head, a two-year school of trainers was established as a branch of the Malakhov school to train the sports club activity managers.
It was in 1964 that Rector Aksyonov D.E. and Shavyrin B.I., Chief Engineer of the Engineering Design Bureau, came up with a Physical Education Department foundation initiative, and V.G. Kalashnikov was nominated its first dean to combine, in the early years, this position with his responsibilities of the Physical Education Chair Head due to the staff limitations at that time.
Since 1965, the Physical Education Department has been training Physical Education and Sport teachers taking full advantage of the vast knowledge, skills and experiences of the oldest faculty members and founders including V.G. Kalashnikov, B.F. Prokudin, N.N. Kalnin, Y.L. Lazeyev, L.I. Afanasyeva, A.P. Zabavnikov and B.I. Turkunov.
Since 1966, the Physical Education Department has run a Correspondence Education Department – when a few new buildings were commissioned on the campus including the still operating multilevel lecture building, 2 dormitories for 1000 students and two apartment buildings for the faculty. Thus the Institute has grown up from the two chairs and 800 students in the 1950ies to 6 departments and more than 2000 students in 1969, when its founder Aksyonov D.E. retired to leave behind a modern graduate school and an excellent education center crowned by the Institute.
Sports in the Institute were spearheaded from the very first years of its operations by the skating group. Thus Valery Muratov qualified for the Olympic Games as early as in 1968 to become a few years later a two-time world champion, three-time Olympic medalist, Honorary Master of Sports, Honorary Coach of the Soviet Union and Russia in speed skating. The leadership in the national skating sport was inherited by Yu. Muratov, A. Kudinov, P. Fuflygin, I. Kovrova and many others. Presently the academic skaters of Kolomna Pedagogical Institute are still ranked the strongest in the country.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Physical Education Department sponsored the elite of the Voskresensk Chemist Ice Hockey team and even trained a group of coaches who later on raised a pool of prominent national ice hockey masters including Igor Larionov, Yuri Lyapkin, Vladimir Smagin, Golikov brothers and Syrtsov who won the titles of Olympic, World and European champions and the NHL Stanley Cup winners.
Academic rowers of the Institute have been no least successful. Thus in 1972 eight rowers including Alexander Shitov, Victor Dementiev, Valery Bisarnov, Sergey Kolyaskin, Boris Vorobyov and Alexander Ryazankin won the USSR championship and the fourth team standing at the Olympic Games in Munich. Their fame was inherited and advanced by the successful sport records of Vladimir Sokolov, Victor Pitirimov, Victoria Proshkina, Roman Veselkin, Sergey Babaev and many others.
In subsequent years, the great sports traditions of the faculty were advanced by new generations of students including Valery Losev, World and Olympic volleyball champion; Sergey Kodentsov and Igor Pugachev, World parachuting champions; Tatyana Papilina and Olga Voronova, World Class Masters of Sports in track and field events; Alexander Filimonov, World Karate Champion and Chief Instructor of Russia in Goju-Ryu style; and many others. Great contributions to the Physical Education Department progress were made by many talented teachers including Bessonova N.M., Golomazov V.A., Gudkov B.P., Golovkin P.V., Goloshchapov B.R., Demidenko I.Y., Dyakov D.V., Zabavnikova I.V., Isaev G.G., Melnikov A.G., Eglit N.Y., Selivanov G.A., Zhuravlev S.K., Borisova L.M. et al.
No wonder that the Physical Education Department is deservedly considered a pride of our University and the city of Kolomna. More than 300 academic athletes have successfully combined studies with sports to qualify for the Masters of Sports and World Class Masters of Sports and successfully compete in the Student University Games, Olympic Games and World and European championships. It should be emphasized that the gorgeous traditions of the older generations are still alive today among the Physical Education Department students. Presently the Physical Education Department is proud of its many elite academic athletes competing in the adult national teams. Since at least the 1970s the Physical Education Department has run extensive and ambitious research activity, with its faculty having published many monographs, textbooks, practical guides and scientific articles. Since 1984 the Physical Education Department has been in charge of the Physical Education school teacher retraining programs of the Russian Federation.
It was in 1990 that an experimental training group for the hearing-impaired students was established at the Kolomna Pedagogical Institute Physical Education Department under the target educational program of the All-Russian Society of the Deaf. The group was successfully trained in 1991 through 1996 under a special curriculum and every group member received a standard academic diploma.
Since 1990, the Physical Education Department has been running, under direct supervision of Professor B.F. Prokudin, an international (formerly inter-university) Practical Research Conference “Man, Health and Physical Education and Sports in the Changing World” to make a great contribution to the educational policies and practices improvement projects and the theoretical and practical research in the national education system.
These efforts have been acknowledged by a few high awards: thus Professor Ivan Pavlovich Bashkatov was titled Honorary Worker of Science of the Russian Federation; Associate Professor Vladimir Dmitrievich Kovalev, long-time Physical Education Department Head, received the Class II Medal for Services to the Fatherland; and Professor Baryshnikov Y.A. was titled Honorary Physical Education and Sports Worker of the Russian Federation. As thing now stand, the Physical Education Department employs 25 teachers with 22 of them have research degrees and titles. For the last 20 years, 8 PhD theses were defended by the Physical Education Department faculty and graduates.
The education curriculum of the modern Physical Education Department is rather sport-specific to secure fast progress in track and field events, gymnastics, swimming, skiing, speed skating, active games, team sports, tourism, martial arts, etc. The curriculum helps the students master the sport techniques and tactics on a practical basis, accumulate practical experiences, get sport qualifications and master the teaching/ coaching theories and practices. Every student is required to select some sport discipline straight after entering the University to excel in the academic training period.
These trainings secure a high versatility of the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills for the Physical Education Department graduates for success in virtually every career in the Physical Education and Sport sector. The sport excellence training courses give every opportunity for the academic athletes to progress in gymnastics, aerobics, shaping, basketball, volleyball, football, table tennis, speed skating, skiing, track and field sports, competitive and recreation tourism, martial arts etc.
Presently the Physical Education Department trains many elite academic athletes including more than 20 MS and 3 WCMS competing for the junior and adult national teams. On the whole, the Physical Education Department has trained, for the 55 years of its service, more than 5,000 graduates including 300 honorary diploma holders.
Conclusion. Success for the Physical Education Department service has been largely due to the practical support from the KPI leaders including its rectors Aksyonov D.E., Kryazhev P.E. and Koreshkov B.D. We should acknowledge with gratitude that Professor Mazurov A.B., incumbent GSU rector, Doctor of Historical Sciences has followed the suit to efficiently and effectively lead and advance the academic education service. Presently the University offers 27 Physical Education and Sport specialist training curricula including the special pedagogic education curricula; services of the Advanced Education and Professional Retraining Sub-department; and 19 graduate training curricula; with more than 40 Doctors of Sciences and Professors serving at 32 sub-departments. More than 70% of the faculty holds academic degrees and titles. The University runs fellowship projects for foreign specialists and multiple student research projects and conferences, with the achievements reported by the renowned journals and bulletins, and with many students nominated laureates of the national Olympiads.

Abstract
The article gives a historical progress analysis of the Physical Education and Sports Department of State University of Humanities and Social Studies including contributions of its leaders in the theoretical research and competitive progress, with detailed accounts of the practical achievements in every domain and project for the last 55 years. Physical Education and Sports Department is deservedly proud of the great competitive accomplishments of its students and graduates including the World and European Champions and Olympic Champions. 22 of 25 people in the Physical Education and Sports Department faculty have scientific degrees and titles. For the last 20 years, the faculty and graduates have defended 8 PhD dissertations. Presently the Physical Education and Sports Department trains many promising highly skilled athletes (including 20 MS and 3 WCMS), members of junior and adult national teams in different sport disciplines. For the last 55 years, the Physical Education and Sports Department has trained more than 5 thousand certified specialists including 300 with honorary diplomas.
