Objective of the study was to analyse the modern developmental problems faced by the Russian ice hockey system and find the ways for its further progress. The study considers the key matters that need to be critically analysed and identifies the potential growth points that may contribute to further progress of the Russian ice hockey in the short run including: early specialisation in the children’s ice hockey system; management and staffing aspects of the academic ice hockey system; and the refereeing service quality improvement in the professional, amateur and junior sport systems.
The author believes that the negative trends in the children’s ice hockey system may be reversed by the better medical and biological support service and prudent staffing policies. The article shares a practical experience of how some academic sport problems were solved by the Lesgaft University Ice Hockey Team managed and operating as required by the modern educational concept of the Ice Hockey Theory and Practice Department. For the refereeing service quality improvement, the P.F. Lesgaft NSU approved Statute of IHA.
It was concluded that the Russian ice hockey further progress may be secured by the theoretical and practical resource of the national university system with its great human resource, faculties and research assets that need to be mobilized for its success.
