Development of professional competencies of physical education teachers and trainers related to the formation of functional literacy of students in the context of additional professional education

Objective of the study was to identifying the potential of the additional education system in solving the problem of training physical education teachers and coaches to develop students' functional literacy.
Methods and structure of the study. The scientific work was carried out at the Ulyanovsk State University of Education on a sample of physical education teachers and coaches of the Ulyanovsk region. The study used theoretical methods: analysis, synthesis and generalization of the results of modern research. The empirical method was a survey using a questionnaire for self-assessment of professional deficiencies of teachers in matters of forming functional literacy.
Results and conclusions. The analysis of primary sources allowed us to define one of the significant areas of scientific research, caused by the search for ways and means of developing professional competencies of physical education teachers and coaches, their readiness and ability to work on the formation of functional literacy of students. An important resource that ensures the timely identification of professional deficiencies of teachers and the development of «sagging» skills and abilities is the sphere of additional professional education. During the implementation of the experimental part of the study, professional difficulties in the field of forming the functional literacy of students in physical education and sports classes were identified. To a greater extent, they manifest themselves in relation to the methods of forming creative thinking, global competencies and financial literacy, to a lesser extent - natural science and reading types. The resources of additional professional education allow us to correct the identified deficiencies of students of advanced training courses based on the use of modern methods and techniques.
