Development potential of wheelchair basketball in Russia

Introduction. Sports are recognized as very important, from a social and medical point of view [1]. Currently, Paralympic sport is gaining great importance all over the world. Wheelchair basketball is a young but actively developing sport, which is played in more than 80 countries around the world [2].
The purpose of the study is to assess the potential for the development of wheelchair basketball in Russia according to the degree of motivation of Russian Paralympic basketball players.
Methodology and organization of the study. The respondents in the study were wheelchair basketball players – 61 people from Moscow, Moscow Region, St. Petersburg, Ulyanovsk Region, Tyumen, Kazan, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug with musculoskeletal pathology. They were surveyed using a questionnaire prepared by the authors with the possibility of evaluating the significance of individual moments of their sports activities according to a ten-point system. The results of the survey were processed by the method of averages.
The results of the study and their discussion. Athletes who devoted themselves to wheelchair basketball gave similarly high marks to the work of their sports clubs. The arithmetic mean value on this issue was equal to 8.36± 0.23. Athletes from Moscow, St. Petersburg, and the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug expressed the highest opinion of their clubs - their score ranged from 9-10 points. According to the results of the survey, it was found out that, on average, wheelchair basketball players train 4 times during the week. The absolute majority of respondents, 92%, expressed a desire to train 5 times a week, pointing to the potential for the development of this sport. Wheelchair basketball also had a serious future, as indicated by the fact that 97% of Paralympians had a strong desire to win the Russian, world and Paralympic Championships.
Conclusions. Wheelchair basketball players highly appreciate the work of their clubs and consider it real to achieve maximum sports results at championships and championships of various levels. At the same time, which is especially important, wheelchair basketball players see the possibility of winning various international competitions. This indicates a great potential for development and the possibility of high performance of this type of Paralympic sport in Russia in the near future.
