Objective of the study was to identify the relationship (or lack thereof) between indicators of the population’s provision of sports facilities and the proportion of the population involved in physical exercise and sports.
Methods and structure of the study. The work used indicators of statistical reporting in the field of physical culture and sports for 2016-2022, statistical materials of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation “Indicators of the development of physical culture and sports” for 2016 and 2022.
Results and conclusions. Despite the steadily increasing provision of sports facilities, a statistically significant relationship between one-time capacity and the share of the population involved in physical exercise and sports over seven years was found in half of the calculation results for eight federal districts (27 out of 56). In five out of eight districts based on seven years of data, a consistently significant correlation between the studied indicators was found. It has been confirmed that increasing the provision of sports facilities is a necessary, but not always sufficient condition leading to an effective increase in the number of people involved in physical exercise and sports. It is known that the number of people involved is influenced by many factors, including the provision of regions with professional personnel and especially the effectiveness of their activities. Research in this direction should be continued.
