Objective of the study was to demonstrate the unique experience (for Russia) of mutually beneficial cooperation between the university and professional clubs in team sports using the example of Siberian Federal University and professional clubs from the highest and the first Russian leagues representing the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
Research methods and structure. This study is based on a questionnaire survey of 215 students and graduates who studied or graduated from Siberian Federal University and regularly played for the university’s national teams in competitive sports: basketball, volleyball, futsal, rugby, football, ice hockey, bandy. The age of the survey participants was 18-26 years.
Results and discussion. We reviewed the experience of mutually beneficial cooperation between the Siberian Federal University and professional Russian clubs in team sports (football, futsal, basketball, volleyball, ice hockey, bandy, rugby) playing in the top and first national leagues. We show the perspectives and the need for partnership between a modern university and professional clubs for the development of team sports in the country, and for the increase of reputation of Russian universities.
Thus, pursuing a policy of multifaceted cooperation with professional teams, Siberian Federal University fulfills the “anchor” function, securing highly qualified athletes in the Siberian region in terms of team sports and maintaining the sports training system in the direction: children and youth - students - professional sports. It is important to note that cooperation with professional clubs enhances the academic reputation of the university and attracts athletically gifted Russian and foreign citizens. This allows us to recommend for other Russian universities the system of support for team game sports implemented in the Siberian Federal University, including interaction with professional clubs. Obviously, the implementation of cooperation will require the attraction of additional financial resources and the political will of leaders. To motivate them to interact with professional clubs, program assessments of the development of college sports in the country and in a particular university should contain targets that characterize college sports as a reserve of professional sports.
